Whenever a wager is on the line that involves someone shaving their head, I'm in. I'm sold. And I'm rooting like hell for said person to lose.
In this case, Cincinnati president Santa Ono lost because his school won. Ten in a row, in fact. Earlier this season Ono said he'd lop off his locks if the hoops team won 10 straight. Well, despite the Bearcats losing three of their last four and starting Big East play 1-2, they did open the season 12-0. So the hair had to go.
And go it did during halftime of Cincinnati's 66-60 Monday night loss to No. 17 Notre Dame. Ono wasn't the only one who went under the buzzer. His school's student body president, Lane Hart, as well as a young cancer survivor, Matt Neitzke, all went bald in the name of cancer awareness for the Dragonfly Foundation. The Dragonfly Foundation is based in the greater Cincinnati area and is funded to help/save lives of children with illness, primarily cancer and blood disease.
"There are a lot of presidents around the country who would not have done what you did tonight," famous Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman told Ono afterward. Brennaman MC'd the halftime event and knew how Ono felt; the great play-by-play man shaved his head last year after putting his hair on the line in regard to a Reds winning streak, also on behalf of the Dragonfly Foundation.
Here's a great slideshow of the befores and afters. Here's to hoping the hair grows back as slowly as possible; the reminder of why it's gone is all the more positivity for doing it in the first place.
