Notre Dame's Scott Martin elects to have career-ending surgery

By Jeff Goodman | College Basketball Insider

Scott Martin just couldn't do it any more.

I got that sense when I spoke to him the other day that Notre Dame's senior forward -- who was granted a sixth-year by the NCAA prior to the season -- was on the verge of shutting it down for the season and for his college career. Martin decided to have surgery on Wednesday, effectively ending any thought of him trying to return to the court this season for the Irish.

"I had a good run, but I came up a month short at the end," Martin told "I did everything I could. We tried everything on it."

The 6-foot-8 Martin began his career with Robbie Hummel, E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson at Purdue. He left after one season, sat out at Notre Dame and then tore his ACL before his sophomore season. Martin has played the past three seasons in South Bend and was averaging 7.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season while shooting 46 percent from beyond the arc.

However, his knee -- the same one he injured a few years back -- began to bother him. He shut it down nearly a month ago in hopes rest would allow him to return to the court, but the pain has persisted and Martin finally opted to make the decision to have surgery.

Notre Dame is 7-2 since Martin left the lineup. Mike Brey has decided to go with two big men in the starting lineup, inserting Maine native Tom Knight alongside Jack Cooley. Garrick Sherman has also picked up more playing time -- and freshman Zach Auguste has made his way into the rotation.
