Montana will be without leading scorer Mathias Ward for the rest of the season, but Grizzlies coach Wayne Tinkle told CBSSports.com that he expects senior guard Will Cherry to return for the Big Sky tournament.
"He thought he re-broke his foot, but we think it was just scar tissue," Tinkle said of Cherry.
The 6-foot-7 Ward was averaging 14.8 points for Montana, and he started the first 24 games of the season before suffering a broken foot on Feb. 16 in a win at Idaho State. He had surgery on Wednesday.
Cherry broke his foot in the offseason and missed the first seven games of the year. He sat out the last two games after injuring his foot in a loss to Davidson -- and will likely sit the final two of the regular season: Thursday night against Sacramento State and Saturday against Northern Arizona.
Montana is 21-6 overall and 17-1 in the Big Sky, one game ahead of Weber State. The Big Sky tournament is at the site of the regular-season champion and begins on March 14.
