No. 2 Ohio State avoids Georgetown's fate, rolls over Iona

DAYTON, Ohio -- While most of the country was focused on No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast taking down No. 2 Georgetown, second-seeded Ohio State made sure there were no issues in its Round of 64 game.

The Buckeyes went on a 15-0 run that spanned both halves to turn a four-point edge into a 19-point lead and eventually defeated Iona, 95-70.

Aside from a run late in the first half from Iona, the game was never really close. Ohio State led by 19 points with nine minutes left in the first half, and only needed to weather one run from the No. 15-seeded Gaels.

Deshaun Thomas got going early, as Iona couldn't handle his combination of strength and scoring ability, finishing with 24 points on 12 shots. Highlight-reel forward Sam Thompson went for 20 points and 10 rebounds, including a ridiculous one-handed alley-oop finish in the first half.

That's now nine wins in a row for Ohio State, which won its final five games of the regular season -- including victories over Michigan State and Indiana -- then emerged as the champion of the Big Ten tournament.

With the West Regional no longer featuring the No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 seeds, Ohio State's path to the Final Four might be getting easier. Given the way the Buckeyes are playing -- and the production they are getting from the complementary players -- a trip to Atlanta isn't far-fetched.

Ohio State will play the winner of Notre Dame and Iowa State on Sunday.
