VCU lost to Michigan, meaning 'Shaka Watch 2013' has arrived

Michigan was so impressive right from the start Saturday that the outcome of its Round of 32 game against VCU was determined pretty early on. But the final horn didn't sound until 2:14 EDT. So let the record show that Shaka Watch 2013 officially began at 2:14 EDT.

Will he stay?

Will he leave?

It's that time of the year again, boys and girls.

So let me go ahead and tell you that ... I have no idea and neither does anybody else.

It's just too early to know for sure.

Granted, that won't stop reporters from asking or fans from speculating because that's what reporters and fans do. Most of it will be rooted in nothing. Some of it will be worth exploring. But at the end of the day, I suspect, VCU's Shaka Smart will basically do what he's done after each of the past two seasons, which is listen, weigh the pros and cons of everything and then make a decision after consulting with his wife and staff.

And he won't just take any job for more money.

That much I can tell you for sure.

Smart has already turned down NC State (in 2011) and Illinois (in 2012), so if your job isn't as good as those jobs, please, don't even bother. In other words, there's nothing available at this moment that this 35-year-old star would take. But there's a lot of speculation that Ben Howland will either leave or be asked to leave UCLA soon, and, if that happens, the opportunity to be the head coach in Westwood is something almost anybody would seriously consider, Smart included. So we'll continue this conversation, if that happens.

But let's try to relax for now.

Smart is happy at VCU. He isn't looking to leave.

He probably will someday, I guess.

But we're all going to die someday, too.

Worrying about it nonstop seems like a waste of energy.
