All-conference guard Justin Edwards transferring from Maine

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Although Maine went 11-19 this season and finished sixth in the America East, there was a little bit of optimism for the Black Bears heading into 2013-14. Nearly everyone was expected to return -- and Maine did notch wins over NCAA tournament participants Florida Gulf Coast and Albany, as well as CAA champion Northeastern.

Some of that optimism dissipated on Thursday, though, when leading scorer Justin Edwards announced via Twitter he plans to transfer following his sophomore season.

Edwards, a second-team all-conference guard, averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists this season.

Expect him to have plenty of suitors during the transfer season. Edwards is a terrific offensive player who can create his own shot off the bounce while also making plays for teammates. He also draws fouls at a relatively high clip. Defensively, the Canada native can be disruptive with steals.

Edwards will have two years of eligibility remaining.
