Richard Pitino will succeed Tubby at Minnesota

By Jeff Goodman | College Basketball Insider

Richard Pitino has reached an agreement to succeed Tubby Smith at Minnesota, sources told CBSSports.com.

Sources told CBSSports.com that Rick Pitino's son, who led Florida International to 18 victories in his first season as a head coach, was offered the job and accepted on Wednesday afternoon. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Sources told CBSSports.com that athletic director Norwood Teague met with Pitino and Towson coach Pat Skerry in Florida on Wednesday. Arizona State assistant Eric Musselman was also involved.

Richard Pitino, 30, was previously an assistant to his dad at Louisville and at Florida with Billy Donovan.

Teague and his right-hand man, Mike Ellis, hired Shaka Smart as a fairly unknown assistant at Clemson and Florida to be head coach at VCU.
