Pac-12 coordinator of officials resigns amid controversy

Pac-12 coordinator of officials Ed Rush announced his resignation Thursday -- just three days after CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman's reported that he told a group of referees during the Pac-12 tournament that he'd give them either $5,000 or a trip to Cancun if they hit Arizona coach Sean Miller with a technical foul or ejected him from a game.

"My first and highest concerns have always been the integrity of the game of basketball and the honor of the craft of officiating," Rush said. "My decision to resign reflects my strong desire to see the Pac-12 officiating program continue to grow and thrive."

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott initially stood by Rush. But the story developed into a hot-button issue in recent days and it became clear that Rush continuing in his role wouldn't be practical given that his comments -- whether they were serious or in jest -- undermined the league's ability to be perceived fairly. As I wrote Monday, every call made for or against Arizona would be viewed as agenda-driven as long as Rush remained in charge of officials, which is why he couldn't be allowed to remain in charge.

Scott and Rush eventually realized this.

So the Pac-12 is looking for a new coordinator of officials.
