NCAA announces all-time tourney players, team and moment

By Matt Norlander | Staff Writer

On Friday the NCAA announced its "All-Time March Madness" players, team and moment. It's the 75th anniversary of the NCAA tournament, and so this is part of the celebration and recognition. A TV special on the selections will air Friday night on CBS Sports Network at 9:30 ET.

"The NCAA will honor the Top All-Time March Madness Team and the Top All-Time March Madness Moment at halftime of the Wichita State/Louisville game, and the Top 15 All-Time March Madness Players during halftime of the Syracuse/Michigan game on Saturday, April 6, in Atlanta," according to the organization's statement.

So who are the 15 best players? Well, let the controversy begin. This voting was a combination of fan input and the NCAA's panel of experts. Alphabetically listed, your All-Time tournament team/roster is:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Larry Bird

Bill Bradley

Patrick Ewing

Grant Hill

Earvin "Magic" Johnson

Michael Jordan

Christian Laettner

Jerry Lucas

Danny Manning

Hakeem Olajuwon

Oscar Robertson

Bill Russell

Bill Walton

Jerry West

Best moment of all-time? Easy shot. Well, easy decision. The shot only looked easy, but is now the most famous in the history of college basketball. Christian Laettner's fallaway jumper to beat Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional final.

The team? The last undefeated club to get through a season start to finish, the '76 Indiana Hoosiers.

Good list overall, I think. You could make an argument for a different player here or there. Grant Hill seems a sentimental choice. Danny Manning had that huge impact run, but is he one of the 15 best ever in the tournament? Hey, maybe. The debate is fun.
