Russ Smith on the verge of elite NCAA tournament scoring club

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Russ Smith is a tremendous defender but also fearless on offense. (USATSI)

Russ Smith has had a pretty fantastic tournament for Louisville, folks. He's yet to put up fewer than 20 points in a game, and by doing that, he made the voters who kept him off the first and second Consensus All-American teams look silly.

So, with the title game a few hours away, here's how Smith stands on the doorstep of history. With one more output of at least 20 points, against Michigan, he'll share the space next to Richard Hamilton ('99), Glen Rice ('89), Danny Manning ('88) and Johnny Dawkins ('86) as the only players to go 6 for 6 in tourney games with 20 or more.

Quite an offensive feat at a time when plenty have bemoaned the lack of stars and scoring in the sport. Also cool: Smith would easily be the shortest player to achieve this. He's listed at 6 feet; Dawkins was 6-foot-2.

Who's done it five and six times? The list is a bit longer -- but still fairly exclusive. Courtesy of Stats, Inc.
