Cincinnati extends Cronin's contract

The University of Cincinnati announced Wednesday that it's opted to extend the contract of its coach, Mick Cronin, through the 2018 season. It is a one-year extension on his current deal, which will now expire on March 26, 2018. It's been agreed to in principle and should be official in June.

The school notes an extension in the contract could occur again if the Bearcats make the NCAA tournament next season or the year after. Cronin has made the NCAAs the past three seasons and averaged 22.2 wins the past five years.

“In an industry where coaching changes occur frequently, Mick brings a tremendous amount of stability to our program and loyalty to our institution and community," UC AD Whit Babcock said in a statement. "When coach Cronin first arrived at UC, he had one scholarship student-athlete on the roster. Our basketball program has steadily progressed on an upward trajectory.”

Cronin's 135 victories with the program are third-best in Cincinnati history. Attendance for last season's Bearcats home games were the highest since Cronin arrived.

“I can honestly say that I have the best job in America, serving as an ambassador for the city in which I've grown up and university that means so much to me," Cronin said.

Details of the new deal won't be known until June, when the University of Cincinnati's Board of Trustees pushes the new contract through. This is a sign of stability for Cincinnati, which will be part of the re-branded American Athletic Conference, the other half of the broken Big East.
