Miami quickly emerges as front-runner for Angel Rodriguez

By Jeff Goodman | College Basketball Insider

Miami has quickly emerged as the front-runner for Kansas State transfer Angel Rodriguez and it would be shocking if he didn't land with the Hurricanes, multiple sources told CBSSports.com.

The 5-foot-11 point guard played at Krop High near Miami, and his family lives in Puerto Rico. He elected to leave Kansas State on Monday and stated he wanted to be closer to his family.

Miami is the logical choice for numerous reasons, most of all due to proximity. Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators likely won't be in the equation due to the fact that they will bring in Kasey Hill -- one of the top freshman point guards in the nation.

Rodriguez averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists per game last season for a Kansas State team that went 27-8 overall and 14-4 in the Big 12.

Miami is still waiting on word from sophomore point guard and ACC Player of the Year Shane Larkin on whether he will return next season or declare for the NBA Draft. The NBA deadline is Sunday, and Larkin may not make his decision until the final day. The Hurricanes won the ACC regular-season title and also the league tournament, but the departure of Larkin would mean Jim Larranaga loses his top six scorers.

If Larkin does return and Rodriguez receives a waiver from the NCAA and is able to play immediately (two major question marks), it would give Miami one of the best backcourts in the entire country and put the Hurricanes in the equation to return to the NCAA tournament. Even if Larkin returns and Rodriguez isn't eligible immediately, he'd be able to practice against one of the top point guards in the nation next season and then be handed the ball in 2014-15.
