DeAndre Kane leaving Marshall, likely to benefit from transfer rule

By Jeff Goodman | College Basketball Insider

DeAndre Kane has averaged more than 15 points in all three of his seasons at Marshall and also put up seven assists per game this past season. Now the 6-foot-4 guard is parting ways with the program.

Sources told CBSSports.com that Kane will likely graduate this summer -- and obviously won't be able to transfer anywhere within Conference USA.

But Kane will be able to help another program next season -- and this is where the fifth-year transfer rule becomes a complete farce. It's supposed to reward players who graduate in four years and still have a year of eligibility remaining. However, in many cases, it's now become a means for coaches to recruit kids from a lower-level school who can help them immediately. Now Kane will likely just pick another academic program that wasn't offered at Marshall, and be allowed to play immediately at another school.

He's not going for academic advancement.

He'll basically become free agent, a one-year rental.

Kane is big, strong, athletic and has four years under his belt in the college ranks. He sat out his freshman season after failing to qualify academically, then was productive for three seasons.

Did Kane leave on his own accord or was he forced out by Thundering Herd coach Tom Herrion? I'm not sure yet, but what I do know is that he'll almost certainly wind up in a better spot next season.
