Grayson Allen could be start to special 2014 class for Duke

It was fairly clear early on in the process that Grayson Allen and Duke would be a good fit for one another.

Allen is a terrific outside shooter that doesn't make many mistakes; he's a high-academic kid; and, of course, his dream school was Duke.

The likely couple officially came together on Wednesday evening, as the four-star junior committed to the Blue Devils.

Allen is a very nice pickup for Duke, and he was one of their top prospects on the wing. The Blue Devils conducted an in-home visit with Allen less than two weeks ago, offering him the scholarship he so clearly coveted. While Duke is loaded on the perimeter this season, there could be some playing time in the 2014-15 season.

Tyler Thornton will graduate, while Jabari Parker, Rodney Hood and Rasheed Sulaimon will all be candidates for early-entry to the NBA draft. As a result, Allen could fight with incoming freshman Matt Jones for minutes at the two-guard position.

Ranked No. 31 in the 247 Sports Composite rankings, Allen was a relative unknown heading into the July period last season. After two impressive performances in South Carolina, though, Allen began seeing plenty of interest from colleges. North Carolina State, Florida and North Carolina were recruiting him, but Duke was his dream.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Providence School (Fla.) is one of the better shooters in the class of 2014, but can also get to the rim and makes plays. He's a capable ballhandler who can play multiple positions in the backcourt. Allen is also a decent athlete.

This could be the start to an outstanding recruiting class for Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils. They are squarely in the mix for Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones, two of the top three players in the class of 2014. Their other top targets include Kevon Looney, an elite small forward, and Devin Booker, a five-star shooting guard. While the road to landing Okafor and Jones still has a long way to go, Allen is a very solid start to the 2014 recruiting class.
