Memphis transfer Antonio Barton announced Sunday that he'll enroll at Tennessee, meaning Cuonzo Martin's Vols have landed a replacement for Trae Golden and should be considered a preseason Top 25 team.
Barton will graduate from Memphis before the start of the fall semester.
He'll thus be eligible to play immediately at UT.
Barton decided to transfer from Memphis once Joe Jackson announed he would return because that development ensured Barton would probably be out of the Tigers' rotation, somewhere behind Jackson, Geron Johnson and Chris Crawford in Josh Pastner's pecking order. The 6-foot-2 former starter who averaged 8.2 points per game as a freshman considered Maryland, Texas A&M and Kansas State before settling on Tennessee. It's debatable whether he's a true point guard, sure. But Barton has played the position at the high-major level, and he'll fill the massive void for the Vols created when UT dismissed its veteran point guard, Golden, this month.
A possible starting lineup for the Vols?
How about this:
- G: Antonio Barton
- G: Robert Hubbs
- G: Jordan McRae
- F: Jarnell Stokes
- F: Jeronne Maymon
That's good enough to make the Vols a top-three pick in the SEC.
