As if Kansas wasn't loaded enough for next season, now comes a report that the program is on the verge of signing one of the most coveted assistants in the sport.

Jerrance Howard, most recently on Larry Brown's staff at SMU, has verbally agreed to replace Joe Dooley at Kansas, according to ESPN.com's Jason King. Dooley took the Florida Gulf Coast job in April. Howard was formerly on Bruce Weber's staff at Illinois, then joined Brown when he was hired at SMU in 2012. The Mustangs' incoming class for next fall is a significant step up from the norm that program has hauled in.

The move for Howard -- and Self -- isn't a total surprise; Howard played for Self when Self was the Illinois coach, more than a decade ago. But since finishing his playing days, Howard's been one of the most relentless and successful recruiters on the scene. He worked at Texas A&M and at Kentucky before landing at Illinois with Weber.
