Top-ranked 2014 prospect Jahlil Okafor trims list to eight

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Jahlil Okafor hasn't been able to play much this spring due to an ankle sprain, but he hasn't lost his grasp on the No. 1 spot in the country. The big man at Whitney Young High in Chicago is still atop the 247 Composite rankings for the class of 2014, and it doesn't look like he's going to move down anytime soon.

The 6-foot-10 center is progressing in his recruitment, too, as he tweeted his final list of eight schools.

Five of those schools conducted in-home visits during the spring, with Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Michigan State and Ohio State all stopping by Okafor's home.

The visits gave Okafor and his family a chance to further develop relationships with the potential head coaches.

"The first and most important thing that I'm looking for is where do I feel most comfortable taking my son," Okafor's father, Chuck, told Blue Devil Lair. "That's the most critical thing. I think that'll be a deciding factor. Who do I trust sending my kid? Who do I trust with my son? That's most important thing for me."

One interesting aspect of Okafor's recruitment is his relationship with another top-three prospect, point guard Tyus Jones. They have long said they want to play together at the next level -- and that still looks to be the case.

“I talk to him every day,” Okafor told in April. “He's one of my best friends. We definitely want to go to the same school. Even without basketball, I'd want to go to college with him. He's a point guard, pass first. He makes the game a lot easier for me.”

Jones, a Minnesota native, is down to seven schools: Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota. As you might have noticed, both players put their home-state schools on their individual lists while the other left that school off.

Expect both decision processes to last until at least the fall.
