American Athletic Conference unveils league logo

By Matt Norlander | Staff Writer

The American Athletic Conference (which is requesting everybody refer to it in shorthand as "The American") revealed its logo Thursday morning. It's red, white and blue, as expected with a name like that.

This marks a big step in the changeover from the Big East, which many teams from The American were part of until the split of the Big East created two separate conferences. The new Big East, which is comprised of just basketball schools (Villanova, Marquette, DePaul, Butler, Creighton, Xavier, Providence, etc.) varies from The American, which still has football.

“As with the creation of our name, we worked directly with our institutions, sports marketing experts, media partners and design agencies to create and evaluate a variety of logo options,” commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement. “We took our preferred marks to each institution within our conference for an open forum with school presidents, athletic directors and student athletes to get their input. The elegant, athletic and classic letter A with the unique star inside and AMERICAN underneath was unanimously chosen by every institution."

What are your thoughts? This seems a decent choice, right? It's not really that boring but also not particularly wowing. The American is set to undergo a bit of a media blitz as it heads toward July 1, when the league will officially undertake new operations and enter the fold, for all intents and purposes, in Division I.

If you need a refresher on which teams will be part of this conference in 2013-14, you can check our Conference Catchup from Wednesday, but here's a list as well:
