Shabazz Muhammad's father facing federal charges

Ron Holmes, father of former UCLA star Shabazz Muhammad, has been indicted on federal bank fraud and conspiracy charges. He is being detained in Las Vegas pending a detention hearing, according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.'s attempt to reach Holmes early Friday by phone was unsuccessful.

Holmes has long been a controversial figure in basketball circles because of away-from-the-court developments that clouded Muhammad's amateur career. The family was thoroughly investigated by the NCAA prior to Muhammad ever playing at UCLA because of questionable financial dealings that were first reported by, and a Los Angeles Times article published in March caught Holmes lying about his son's age.

Beyond that, Holmes has a criminal past.

He pleaded guilty in 1999 to using fraudulent bank statements in order to obtain mortgages and had to, according to records, pay a restitution fee of approximately $78,000 to banks and credit unions. Now the U.S. attorney's office is trying to recover more than $2.5 million from Holmes and several associates, all of whom are alleged to have obtained "mortgage loans by fraudulent means to buy houses" from 2006 to 2009.

Holmes once played college basketball at USC.

Muhammad is expected to be a lottery pick in June's NBA Draft.
