Police found loaded gun outside of P.J. Hairston's vehicle

P.J. Hairston's midweek drug arrest now appears worse than it inititally did because the Durham Police Department has confirmed to CBSSports.com that a gun was found outside of the North Carolina standout's vehicle.

This development was first reported by ABC11 in Raleigh-Durham.

Hairston was driving a rented 2013 GMC Yukon that was stopped at a license checkpoint Wednesday night. He and both passengers were subsequently charged with marijuana possession, and that seemed to be the end of the story until ABC11 reported Friday morning that police are running forensics on a gun found outside of the SUV, the implication being that somebody in Hairston's vehicle might've tossed the weapon -- a 9mm with nine rounds of ammunition -- while approaching the checkpoint. If so, this development would obviously complicate Hairston's situation.

Keeping a player with a marijuana charge is one thing.

Keeping a player with a gun charge is another.

"We are still gathering information and may comment further later," UNC senior associate athletic director for communications Steve Kirschner told CBSSports.com on Thursday. The school has not commented further, as of Friday morning.

Hairston averaged a team-leading 14.6 points per game last season for the Tar Heels.
