Ex-Rutgers guard Jerome Seagears leaves Auburn after a month

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

It's been a tumultuous couple of months for guard Jerome Seagears.

First, video surfaced of his coach at Rutgers, Mike Rice, throwing balls at players and verbally abusing them. Rice was subsequently fired. Seagears decided to leave the Scarlet Knights and look elsewhere. In May, he chose to play his final two seasons at Auburn.

Things seemed settled.

Until Monday, when Auburn announced that Seagears would be leaving the school to be closer to his family in Maryland.

"Jerome came to me and expressed that he hadn't truly recovered emotionally from his time at Rutgers," Auburn coach Tony Barbee said in a release. "It is important to him that he continues his academic and athletic career closer to home where he can be near his immediate family and get the support system that he needs."

Seagears considered a variety of schools when he transferred, including Arkansas, West Virginia and others. He averaged 6.5 points and 2.6 assists last season for Rutgers.
