A rundown of developments among assistant basketball coaches

The so-called coaching carousel typically refers to movement among head coaches, and that's basically come to a stop. But assistants are still bouncing around. Here are some updates on the openings at Ohio State, Xavier, Memphis and SMU.

Ohio State

Thad Matta lost Chris Jent this week, when the two-year assistant joined Mike Malone's staff with the Sacramento Kings. That job is now posted and must be, according to law, until next week. But a source told CBSSports.com that Greg Paulus will fill the opening.

And good for Greg Paulus.

The former Duke point guard is nationally known because of his days spent playing for Mike Krzyzewski, but he's spent the past few years earning a reputation as a possible future star in the coaching profession. He worked at Navy during the 2010-11 season before joining Matta's staff as the video coordinator, which isn't a glamorous job. But Paulus recognized it as an opportunity to work under an established coach and with one of college basketball's top programs, and he's done enough over the past two years to give Matta the confidence to promote him even though he's only 26 years old.

Prediction: Paulus will be a head coach in his early 30s, perhaps sooner.

Chris Mack lost Ashley Howard to Villanova last month, which left an opening on the Xavier staff. According to a source, Mack is close to replacing Howard with Missouri assistant Rick Carter.

A formal announcement is expected soon.

Former Drake head coach Mark Phelps would be a candidate to replace Carter at Missouri, a source told CBSSports.com. Phelps is also a candidate to fill a spot on Josh Pastner's staff at Memphis, which brings me to ...

Pastner hired LSU's Robert Kirby last month to replace Damon Stoudamire (now at Arizona), but he's still trying to fill a third spot on his staff. The fifth-year Memphis head coach has already interviewed Phelps, current ESPN analyst Miles Simon, Loyola assistant Jason Gardner and former Memphis State star Keith Lee. The next candidate to interview will likely be Samford assistant Yasir Rosemond, a source told CBSSports.com.

Either way, a final decision on filling this spot isn't expected soon.

Pastner, as usual, is in no hurry.

Larry Brown lost Jerrance Howard to Kansas earlier this month, wich was a tough blow in recruiting. Kansas State assistant Alvin Brooks III was initially considered the front-runner, but a source told CBSSports.com that probably isn't going to happen now. Consequently, Brown is still evaluating candidates and would like somebody with Texas ties, the source said. Like Pastner, he's in no hurry.
