Former UNC Asheville guard Keith Hornsby makes move to LSU

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Some things will never change.

Under-recruited high school prospect puts up big numbers at a mid-major school and then bolts to a higher level to try his hand against stiffer competition.

That's just the way it is.

Keith Hornsby is the latest, as the former UNC Asheville guard decided on Monday night that he was heading to LSU.

(Oh, Hornsby is the son of Grammy Award winner Bruce Hornsby -- hence the first few sentences.)

“It is definitely a relief,” Keith Hornsby told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “But I'm excited all the same. It has been a crazy two weeks. I got to meet some great people in the process, but I think I've picked the best place for me.”

Hornsby, a 6-foot-4 guard, also looked at Saint Mary's and North Carolina State, although the Wolfpack picked up shooting guard Trevor Lacey from Alabama on Monday afternoon. He will sit out the upcoming season and have two years of eligibility left.

Last season, Hornsby averaged 15.0 points and 3.1 assists, while knocking down nearly 38 percent of his 3-pointers. He was also one of the best free-throw shooters in the country, making 92.5 percent of his foul shots.

While moving to the SEC will certainly be a step up in competition, Hornsby played his high school games at Oak Hill Academy, alongside players like Ben McLemore and other high-major prospects. He also proved during his sophomore season he could get buckets against top-tier competition. This past season, Hornsby scored 23 points against NC State and 26 against Ohio State.
