Minnesota transfer Joe Coleman lands at Saint Mary's

Former Minnesota guard Joe Coleman has decided on Saint Mary's, he told CBSSports.com on Monday.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4 guard from Minneapolis, also took an official visit to Creighton before making a decision. Florida State, Oregon, Gonzaga, Missouri, Providence, Boston College, Maryland and Nevada also reached out.

"Coach [Randy] Bennett has done well with guards," Coleman said via text message. "Opportunity is there. It's somewhere I can come in, play and develop into more of a complete guard."

Coleman asked for his release from Minnesota in mid-May, about six weeks after Tubby Smith was fired as the head coach of the Golden Gophers. Richard Pitino took over the program, and Coleman saw the change in leadership as a chance to make a move.

"After coach Smith left, I felt it was a good time where I could find a place to expand my game and become more of a complete guard," Coleman said.

He averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds last season as a sophomore. He will sit out the 2013-14 season because of transfer rules.
