Jermaine Marshall transferring from Penn State to Arizona State

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Penn State transfer Jermaine Marshall is heading to Arizona State, according to a source.

CBSSports.com's Gary Parrish obtained the news Monday afternoon. It's a good get for ASU; Marshall averaged more than 15 points per game last season, in addition to 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He stepped up big in the absence of Penn State's best player, Tim Frazier, who went down last fall with a torn Achilles.

The 6-foot-4 slashing senior guard is eligible immediately because he's set to graduate from PSU in August, leaving open the graduate transfer criterion, which allows college basketball players to switch schools for their final year without sitting out a typical redshirt season.

Marshall announced his departure from the Nittany Lions in May with the initial intent to pursue a professional career overseas, but in June Marshall's father told ESPN.com his son had reconsidered and would look for a final year in college.

North Carolina, Florida State and Creighton were reported to be other suitors for Marshall.

The move will put more expectations in the Pac-12 on an Arizona State team that could have the best returning player in the conference, point guard Jahii Carson. This also means coach Herb Sendek will be under atypical pressure at ASU to not only reach the NCAA tournament but perhaps win a few games in late March as well. Sendek has made one NCAA tournament in seven years at the school.
