Successful coaches write books. It's just what happens. Win some games, preferably a championship or two, and get a publisher to plunk down for an easy best-seller. Do a search on Amazon and you'll scroll for the better part of an hour.
Yet, surprisingly, Kentucky coach John Calipari -- who's short on time, but certainly not cash -- has yet to get this thoughts down on the page regarding Kentucky basketball. But that's changing. Calipari announced on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that he's decided to write a book. The title is Players First: Success from the Inside Out.
He explained the decision.
I've been approached many times about doing a book, and I almost always say no, but this one kind of hit home.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) July 16, 2013
This book gives me the chance to go in-depth about how we do things at Kentucky and why we do what we do.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) July 16, 2013
Michael Sokolove, who is doing the book w/ me, is a New York Times Best Seller. We've spent many hours together talking about players first.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) July 16, 2013
Calipari also said the release of this book should come in 2014. An excerpt from the tome is already up, as is the option to pre-order. And just so we're clear, this will be the fourth book Calipari has attached his name to.
Regardless of content or page number, it will sell many, many, many copies. As a reminder, John Calipari is the head coach at the University of Kentucky, where college basketball is kind of one of those things the locals care about.
