Nebraska suspends Deverell Biggs for one regular-season game

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

The start of the regular season is still more than three months away, but that didn't stop Nebraska coach Tim Miles from doling out a punishment.

On Friday afternoon, Miles announced that junior guard Deverell Biggs would miss the first three games next season to suspension, citing a violation of team rules dating back to last season. In reality, Biggs will miss two exhibition games and the regular-season opener, against Florida Gulf Coast, on Nov. 8.

“We are obviously disappointed in Deverell's actions,” Miles said in a statement. “It's inexcusable. I know he has learned from it, and he will proceed accordingly to improve all areas of his life.”

Biggs did not play last season because of a redshirt year. On Dec. 26, 2012, Biggs was cited "on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident in Omaha." His blood-alcohol content checked in at .134, over the legal limit of .08. Biggs was 20 at the time.

“I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and fans for my actions,” Biggs said in a statement. “I understand the seriousness and the consequences of my actions, have learned from the situation and worked hard to move forward. I look forward to representing Nebraska in a positive manner on and off the court.”
