Trae Golden transfers from Tennessee to Georgia Tech

With one year of eligibility remaining, Trae Golden will be at Georgia Tech.

The former star Tennessee guard left the Vols to play for Brian Gregory and the Yellow Jackets. The school announced the move over the weekend. The 6-foot-2 Golden averaged 9.7 points, 3.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds while at Tennessee.

He is from Powder Springs, Ga., and it's unclear whether Golden will be allowed to play next season. Citing a need to transfer closer to home because his father is ill, Golden and Georgia Tech will await the NCAA's decision on whether he'll sit the customary redshirt season or be granted an exemption to close out his career in 2013-14.

"I appreciate everything that Coach [Cuonzo] Martin and Tennessee did for me," Golden told "I feel it's the best move for me to go home to Atlanta so I can be close to my family and help take care of my father."

"He has proven himself at the highest level and his experience and ability to score will help us take another step in our program's rebuilding process," Gregory said. "We are very confident that Trae will be a great addition and be a positive member of our program and the Georgia Tech community."

Golden was Georgia's Mr. Basketball in 2010, his senior year of high school.
