Vandy's Kevin Bright leaves team to play pro ball in Germany

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Vanderbilt sophomore Kevin Bright has left college basketball. The Commodores guard will continue his hoops career overseas, playing pro in Germany.

The news was first reported by Eurobasket.com Monday. CBSSports.com confirmed the report with a source Monday afternoon.

Bright, 21, was a big player for a rebuilding Vandy team last season. He averaged 6.9 points and 5.5 rebounds for the 16-17 Commodores, starting 29 games in the process. Why Germany? It's Bright's home country; he was born in Uln and hails from Manheim. He'll be playing for the Fraport Skyliners, based in Frankfurt. The Eurobasket.com story notes Bright's deal is for two years with an option on the third. No details on contract money were reported.

By agreeing to play professionally, this means Bright's eligibility at the college level is over.

According to The Tennessean, Bright "returned to Germany last week to be with his mother after she suffered a nervous breakdown."

Bright is also quoted in the Eurobasket.com story saying, "Being near my home Manheim is another bonus. I have good opportunities with Frankfurt and I want to help the team. That is very important."

Vanderbilt has now lost three players this offseason. A.J. Astroth and Sheldon Jeter -- both freshmen last year, like Bright was. Kevin Stallings' team has 10 scholarship players as of now, and the team will be taking a 10-day summer trip to practice/play against pro competition in Italy and Greece.
