Poole granted relief waiver at Iona

Mike Poole, a senior guard who recently transfered to Iona from Rutgers, will play next season. The school announced the NCAA's waiver exemption for the transfer, and so the Gaels will have his services for the 2013-14 campaign.

Iona went 20-14 last season and made its second straight NCAA tournament.

The 6-5 Poole averaged 4.4 points and three rebounds for the Scarlet Knights last year.

"I'm really excited to have a student-athlete of Mike's caliber join us this season," Gaels coach Tim Cluess said in a statement. "His leadership and toughness during summer workouts have been tremendous and he will be an integral part of our program."

Poole started 16 games in three seasons at Rutgers. In a game against Iona last season, Poole score 18 points -- his career high.

Iona will likely be favored to win the MAAC again thanks to this news. Five of the top seven scorers from last year's team are back, most notably seniors Sean Armand and Tre Bowman. Junior David Laury is also a boost; the junior averaged 10.3 rebounds in 2012-13.
