After historic turnaround, Towson extends Pat Skerry's contract

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Towson was the worst of the worst in college hoops two seasons ago. It finished 1-31. That was the first season under Pat Skerry, a campaign riddle with transfers and transition and academic rot from previous rosters.

In year two, 2012-13, Towson won 18 games, completing one the biggest turnaround season in college basketball history. For this accomplishment, Towson has awarded Skerry with a two-year contract extension. The new deal runs through the 2018-19 season.

“Watching Coach Skerry's historic turnaround with the Towson men's basketball program both academically and competitively in the last two years, we are excited to announce this extension,” interim AD Tricia Turley Brandenburg said. “With the opening of SECU Arena this year, Towson is poised to be an annual contender in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and carry the banner for its alumni and the city of Baltimore."

The Tigers were a second-place Colonial Athletic Association team last year. The future looks very bright; the 18 victories marked the first winning season for the program since 1996. Towson also notes the team's APR score has risen -- and is expected to rise again -- with a cumulative 2.928 grade-point average.

“I came here to Towson to build a basketball program that would represent this institution both athletically and academically and make our fans and alumni proud,” Skerry said in a statement. “Our hard work and dedication as players and coaches is paying off and now we step into SECU Arena, one of the best facilities anywhere on the east coast.
