TCU's Devonta Abron to miss season with torn Achilles tendon

TCU coach Trent Johnson confirmed to CBSSports.com on Tuesday that Devonta Abron tore an Achilles tendon during a preseason trip to Canada and will miss the season.

"Obviously it's a tough blow for Devonta and for us," Johnson said. "But we'll be fine. We just need to stay healthy [with our remaining players] and we'll have a much better team."

Abron, whose injury was initially reported by ESPN.com, averaged 7.4 points and 5.9 rebounds last season after transferring from Arkansas. The 6-foot-8 forward started 15 times and was expected to combine with heralded freshman Karviar Shepherd on the interior this season to create a formidable frontcourt. But that's not an option now. Consequently, TCU will rely more heavily on Amric Fields and Aaron Durley down low, both of whom were plagued by injuries last season. Fields appeared in just three games before suffering a knee injury. Durley missed the entire year with a knee injury.

The Horned Frogs finished 2-16 in the Big 12 last season.

They were 11-21 overall.
