The NCAA has denied a waiver for Rakeem Buckles, a source confirmed to

Minnesota will appeal the decision on behalf of Buckles, in an attempt to get him on the roster and eligible to play immediately.

Buckles attended Florida International University last season, but sat out after transferring from Louisville. He also was rehabbing from a knee injury during his redshirt year. Before his one year at FIU, Buckles spent three seasons at Louisville, suffering two knee injuries. New Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino was his head coach at FIU and part of the staff at Louisville during Buckles' time with the Cardinals.

The chances of Buckles receiving a waiver initially seemed pretty good, considering Florida International is banned from the postseason this year. Moreover, FIU teammate Malik Smith transferred to Minnesota and is able to play immediately.

Buckles reportedly was admitted to Minnesota but had not yet enrolled. The 6-foot-7 forward had career averages of 4.7 points and 4.2 rebounds at Louisville.
