How does something this big go this wrong? Above, that's former UNLV coach Lon Kruger, at right. Kruger coached the Runnin' Rebels through the 2010-2011 season before taking the Oklahoma job. So, yeah, we're going on about 30 months of Kruger-free UNLV basketball.
Yet this happened. This billboard sits high above Interstate 215 in Las Vegas, and according to the Las Vegas Journal-Review, it went up Wednesday morning. Kruger is pictured alongside UNLV current football coach Bobby Hauck. One out of two ain't bad.
From the Review-Journal:
Rice heard about the faux pas and he took it in stride.
“I thought it was humorous,” the third-year coach said. “It's one of those things that happens. But I'm the last person who would take himself too seriously.
“Hey, if Coach Kruger can help us sell tickets, great.”
Tina Kunzer-Murphy, UNLV's interim athletic director, was not amused.
“To us, it's not a laughing matter,” she said. “We think what happened was the billboard company was doing us a favor by posting the ad but our marketing people never saw it. But it's being taken down and we hope to have a replacement with Dave and Bobby up.”
Wonder how much a mistake like that costs. Well, we know UNLV won't be paying a dime more for it.
It's a funny little mistake, and because Rice is an alumnus of the school, it's not like this error will drum up any old feelings from the fan base for Kruger. He was a fine coach with the Rebs, but fans are thoroughly enjoying what Rice is building out there.
