Legendary Mizzou coach Norm Stewart honored with statue

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame unveiled a bronze statue of former Missouri coach -- and player -- Norm Stewart over the weekend.

Stewart won 634 games with the program, earning 14 conference titles along the way in 32 season as coach of the Tigers. He's not quite as synonymous with the program as Jim Boeheim at Syracuse or John Wooden at UCLA, but he's about as close as you could get to the former two. Prior to landing at Missouri in 1967, Stewart coached at Northern Iowa for a half-decade.

Stewart, who was also an All-American as a guard for Mizzou in the '50s, retired in 1999 with a career record of 731-375.

"I still am having trouble getting my arms around all of it," Stewart said.

He was one of a handful of coaches from the state who were honored in Springfield, Mo., on Saturday.
