Suspended UConn big man Tyler Olander sees DUI charges dropped

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Connecticut senior Tyler Olander was suspended indefinitely earlier this month after being arrested for DUI while also driving without a license.

On Monday, Olander pleaded guilty to driving without a license but the DUI charges were dropped, the New Haven Register reported.

According to the paper, Olander failed a field sobriety test, but two Breathalyzer tests showed he was under the .08 legal limit. He paid a $75 fine for operating without a license.

Does this mean Olander will return to the team?

“That's my goal, and God willing, I'll be back,” Olander told the paper. “I hope people don't see these past incidents as a reflection of who I am. I hope they see me as a good kid that just made some mistakes, as everybody does.”

It would be a big help to Connecticut's 2013-14 goals if Olander were to be reinstated. The Huskies are loaded on the perimeter, with guards Shabazz Napier, Ryan Boatright and Omar Calhoun all back in the lineup, along with matchup problem DeAndre Daniels returning at forward.

However, Kevin Ollie lacks interior punch down low. While Olander doesn't bring much scoring, he is experienced and will provide some rebounding. The only other frontcourt players on the roster include seldom-used sophomores Phillip Nolan and Leon Tolksdorf, and freshmen Kentan Facey and Amida Brimah.

Connecticut opens its season against Maryland on Nov. 8 in Brooklyn.
