Willie Cauley-Stein out up to two weeks with hand injury

Kentucky sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein will miss up to two weeks with a hand injury, the school announced Saturday night.

Cauley-Stein, a 7-foot power forward, suffered a minor injury to his right hand during “basketball activity” on Friday.

Given the timetable, Cauley-Stein should be healthy before Big Blue Madness on Oct. 18, and he should certainly be ready for the season. The Blue-White scrimmage is scheduled for Oct. 29.

Cauley-Stein is expected to start at center for Kentucky this season, and could be poised for a breakout campaign. He averaged 8.3 points and 6.2 rebounds in a complementary role. Cauley-Stein showed promise, though, going for 20 points and seven rebounds against Vanderbilt and notching back-to-back double-doubles against Arkansas and Georgia in February.

He will be joined in the frontcourt by fellow sophomore Alex Poythress, along with stud freshmen Julius Randle, Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee.

The Wildcats will open the season as the No. 1 team in the country. They open the 2013-14 slate on Nov. 8 against UNC-Asheville.
