Larry Krystkowiak is a badass, and a mindful, alert citizen to boot.

The Utah basketball coach reportedly thwarted a would-be bike thief over the weekend, wrangling down the alleged perp on Saturday morning outside the Huntsman Center, where the Utes play, according to a story in the Salt Lake Tribune.

So here's the scene: 7:30 a.m. on a nice, Utah Saturday morning. The 6-9 coach, who used to play pro ball in the NBA, is coming in to prep for the team's second day of practice. You know what? I'll let the coach tell you.

From the Tribune:

"The guy asked me if I was going to chase him if he attempted to run," Krystkowiak said Saturday night. "I told him that if he tried to run, I was going to chase him and tackle him. Honestly, I was hoping that he'd run. I guess a good thief would've run before I caught up to him."

... According to Krystkowiak, the man was riding a bike while holding another bike, which seemed odd. That's when he decided to approach the man.

"He started telling me all kinds of stories," Krystkowiak said. "I guess it was a good way to start the day."

Give the coach credit for his instincts. It's college; you see random, weird things happening all the time. If I saw a college bro with two bikes, I'm not sure I'd have thought anything much of it. (Related: I've been stolen from before, in college.)

If Krystkowiak can get his team to hustle this season like he did Saturday, perhaps he'll find some more job security. The Utes are 21-43 under Krystkowiak in his first two years with the program. Utah's season opens its D-I schedule on Nov. 15 against UC Davis.
