Richard Pitino lands first 2014 commitment at Minnesota

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Richard Pitino and Minnesota have struck out on a few targets in the 2014 class, leading to some nervousness among the Gopher fan base.

Monday afternoon brought good news, however.

Josh Martin, a 6-foot-8 power forward, has committed to Minnesota, sources told CBSSports.com. It is Pitino's first pledge in the class of 2014.

Martin chose the Golden Gophers over Florida State and Pittsburgh. He took official visits to all three schools. He is a three-star prospect from Seattle who is ranked No. 221 in the 247Sports Composite.

Minnesota has been involved with a slew of quality prospects, despite missing out on players like Ja'Quan Newton, Isaiah Whitehead, Paul White and Lourawls Nairn. Three Minnesota natives – Tyus Jones, Reid Travis, Rashad Vaughn – are still on the board, with the coaching staff still holding out hope for Travis and Vaughn.

Junior college prospect Carlos Morris is on the priority list, as are Josh Cunningham and Abdoulaye Gueye. Point guard Riley LaChance could decide soon, although Iowa and Vanderbilt might have the edge there.
