Second knee injury ends career of Colorado State's Jesse Carr

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Colorado State loses five starters from last season, meaning head coach Larry Eustachy needed as much experience as he could find on his roster.

Jesse Carr was expected to be one of those players, as the sixth-year senior was set to return after missing last season due to an ACL injury.

Wednesday brought terrible news: Carr will miss the entire 2013-14 season after re-injuring the ACL in his left knee.

“This is just a devastating injury,” Eustachy said in a release. "Jesse worked harder than anyone to get healthy and get back on the court. This is going to be an extremely tough time for him, but our coaching staff and the entire program are behind him."

Carr, a 6-foot-2 guard from Nebraska, has dealt with injuries his entire career. During his freshman season, he missed six games due to a strained groin -- and injury that also kept him out of all but four games in the 2009-10 campaign. However, he bounced back to average 7.2 points in the 2011-12 season.

One final season was supposed to be a reward for such an injury-filled time in Fort Collins.

"Since this is all new I don't exactly know what my plan is going forward,” Carr said. “I do know that while I am here I want to help the team and coaches in any way possible. I also realize how lucky I am to have received the education that I did, and even luckier to have been around the people that I've been around here at CSU. It has been a rollercoaster-like experience but I wouldn't trade it for anything.”

Colorado State went 26-9 a year ago, reaching the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament before being bounced by Louisville. However, the leading returning scorer is former Arizona transfer Daniel Bejarano, who averaged just 6.3 points last season. Navy transfer J.J. Avila will be leaned upon heavily in the frontcourt.

The Rams open their season at Gonzaga on Nov. 11.
