Santa Clara extends Kerry Keating's contract

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Kerry Keating, coach of Santa Clara, was rewarded with a new deal on Friday. The school announced the news in the lead-up to SCU's season, which will be Keating's seventh with the team. He is 100-102 all time there. Details of the restructured contract were not disclosed.

Santa Clara won 26 games last season, taking home the CBI title in the process. The school notes the "Broncos are one of just two teams nationally to finish with a post-season tournament win twice in the past seven years."

Winning so many games in 2012-13 -- and graduating every single player over the course of Keating's career -- is what led to this move.

"We've graduated each of the 17 seniors to go through the program with Coach, but beyond that I love what they are telling us in their exit interviews," Broncos AD Dan Coonan said. "The program is headed in the right direction, and Kerry is the right person to bring us to the next level."

Keating's program on average has finished fifth in the WCC, which grows to 10 schools this year thanks to the addition of Pacific. Since leaving his post as an assistant at UCLA in 2007, Keating is third in league wins.

"Our family is extremely thrilled to be able to continue building towards our future success here at Santa Clara," Keating said. "We are very grateful for all the players and coaches who have helped us establish a great foundation with Bronco basketball."

Santa Clara -- who we previewed along with all of the WCC here -- starts its D-I schedule Nov. 12 against San Jose State.
