First-year Northwestern coach Chris Collins (who you know as a longtime assistant at Duke) did a good deed last week by surprising one of his players with the best gift he could ask for.
Two-year walk-on James Montgomery was brought up in front of his teammates, and after a few plaudits from Collins, was given a scholarship. He was immediately engulfed by teammates, and while the moment was great, the best part of the video comes at the 1:10 mark, when Montgomery passes along the news to his family.
This is the best side of college sports.
Remember that this is Northwestern -- an extremely expensive and difficult school to get into. Montgomery just happens to be really tall and really good at basketball in addition to pursuing his mechanical engineering degree. Terrific. And how impressive that he shined so well in such a short time to move Collins toward handing him a scholarship.
