Memphis freshman Kuran Iverson to miss regular-season opener

Memphis freshman Kuran Iverson will serve a one-game NCAA suspension to start the regular season because of his participation in an unauthorized summer-league game near his home in Hartford, Conn., the school announced Wednesday.

Iverson will miss the Tigers' Nov. 14 game against Austin Peay at FedExForum.

That means his first college game will be Nov. 18 when Memphis plays at Oklahoma State.

The rule that caused Iverson's suspension is one that states Division I players are only allowed to play in summer-league games in either their home area or close to where they attend school -- but not both. Iverson, early in the summer, participated in the Bluff City Classic in Memphis, which caused his subsequent participation in Hartford to be a violation that school officials later realized and self-reported.

So why is this rule in place?

As Doug Gottlieb pointed out on Twitter, it's because the NCAA doesn't want players spending the summer participating in several events designed to generate money for outsiders. And I get that, I guess. But the whole thing still serves as a reminder that student-athletes are restricted in ways that make no sense to most people, and that the NCAA is basically structured to maximize what it and schools can make off of a group of unpaid amateurs while trying to minimize the ways in which anybody else could possibly profit. If it sounds hypocritical, that's because it is. But that's another column for another time.
