Report: Michigan big man Mitch McGary will miss season-opener

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

We passed along word last week that Michigan's Mitch McGary is dealing with back issues that could affect his season.

And now it officially has. Mark Snyder of USA Today reports that McGary will not play Friday in the Wolverines' season-opening game against UMass-Lowell. UM coach John Beilein made the announcement Thursday morning, according to the story.

"He's improving every day, making great improvements in everything he can do," Beilein said.
Just what he can do remains cryptic. Beilein and McGary haven't provided many specifics about what he is doing, only briefly mentioning that he's working with an underwater treadmill, shooting free throws and catching passes with two hands.

McGary, a second-team All-American for this preseason, is dealing with a lower-back injury that has affected his conditioning and ability to practice throughout the past six weeks. Back injuries can be tedious, nebulous recovery situations, and so it's still not known when McGary will be cleared.

He opted to return to school for his sophomore season instead of entering last summer's NBA Draft. Michigan is the No. 12 team in's preseason Top 25 (and one).
