Virginia Tech drops opener in home loss to USC Upstate

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Friday night brought us Kansas State falling to Northern Colorado and Miami losing to St. Francis (NY). Those were the two big upsets, both on the bigger teams' home court.

Saturday saw a second ACC team victimized by a bad loss. Virginia Tech hosted USC Upstate and left the loser, falling 64-63. It's going to be a long year for the Hokies because they have to replace the production of guard Erick Green. Green led the nation in scoring last year.

The win for USC Upstate was the program's first in its history against an ACC program. The Spartans' Ty Green led the team with 17 points. Va. Tech's Jarell Eddie had a game-high 18 points. Eddie missed a free throw in the final 90 seconds that prevented Virginia Tech from tying the game.

The Hokies lost despite shooting better from the floor (39 to 38 percent), better from 3-point range (37 to 31 percent) and committing fewer fouls (12 to 16). They'll get West Virginia next. That game comes Tuesday.
