Joe Dooley is on the board in Dunk City.
After getting steamrolled in its season opener by Nebraska, Florida Gulf Coast bounced back with a 65-51 win over Hartford on Tuesday morning. Dooley, who replaced Andy Enfield in the spring, notched his first win since arriving in Fort Myers.
Chase Fieler led the way for the Eagles, scoring 30 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Most of his production came in the second stanza, which Gulf Coast dominated after a relatively even opening 20 minutes. No one else scored in double-figures for FGCU, but Brett Comer finished with eight assists to go with nine points.
FGCU's home and away performances were completely different last season, a fact that was overshadowed by its neutral-court run in the Atlantic Sun and NCAA tournaments. The Eagles were 15-1 on their home court a season ago, but went just 6-9 away from home in the regular season. The first two games looked like more of the same from Gulf Coast. However, if you remember, FGCU was obliterated by VCU to open last season – before bouncing back and beating ACC champion Miami.
FGCU's next two D-I opponents are Furman and NC State – both on the road. We'll see if the Eagles can get their road legs (wings?) back.
