Marquette announcer recovering after crash with alleged drunk driver

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Play-by-play announcers have a special relationship with their communities. Marquette's community is going through a scary -- but improving -- saga with its play-by-play announcer. On Wednesday morning Steve "The Homer" True was struck by an alleged drunk driver in northwest Milwaukee. The accident happened at 10 a.m. after, according to the police report, the drunk driver ran a red light.

True, who has called Golden Eagles games for two decades, was sent to the hospital and initially listed in critical condition, specifically with a head injury. Since then, True's state has improved, and according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he did suffer a concussion during the collision.

But on Thursday morning True was said to be up and alert and in good spirits. True was well enough to see visitors, including Marquette coach Buzz Williams and MU assistant athletic director Mike Broeker.
"He's in really good spirits," Williams said, referring to True. "His wife was there. His youngest son was there. I would say he's doing better than you could possibly imagine for what had happened. I think it's near miraculous that he is alive. And considering the shape that he's in, it's maybe just as miraculous that he is OK. I was happy to see him. I feel a lot better.
"He talked non-stop," Williams said. "He wanted to call the game on Saturday but I said I'm not sure you can go from intensive care at 11 (a.m.) on Thursday to our game at 11. I told him hopefully he can get on the plane next Saturday when we leave (for Arizona State)."

How great is that to hear from True's end? This could've been so much worse. Car accidents are an everyday thing across the world, and you simply never know if your next trip is going to be your last. Scary thought. Really happy to see True is already apparently recovering and ready to crack wise as well.

What made the accident Wednesday morning ironic: It was True's 59th birthday.
