Could 2015 guard Damontrae Jefferson be the next Chaz Williams?

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Standing at maybe 5-foot-6, Damontrae Jefferson clearly faces some impediments to playing big-time Division-I basketball.

But there's one comparison that immediately jumps to mind: diminutive Massachusetts point guard Chaz Williams. He's listed at 5-foot-9 (and he's probably smaller) – but that hasn't slowed him down whatsoever. He's averaged better than 16 points and six assists during his three years with the Minutemen, and he's the primary reason for their 6-0 start.

Jefferson can be that sort of player. He's extremely fun to watch, and he immediately speeds the game up when he's on the floor.

“As a guard at my size, you have to be a push guard, so you can have the advantage because of a lack of size,” Jefferson said over the weekend. “And being a pest on D, because that's my job and that's my role.”

The 2015 prospect from Milwaukee is now at Believe Prep (S.C.) and continues to chase his quest of being a college basketball player. Jefferson has been a fixture on the AAU and camp circuit for a few years, so his game is no secret. He's going to push the tempo, get to the rim, play in transition, and shoot deep 3-pointers. Sure, there are weaknesses to his game, but the guy is athletic, fearless and scores points.

On the downside, there are some rumors about his attitude on the court – as well as his behavior off the court.

“I just want to try to better myself as a point guard, change my character, and become who everyone wants me to be,” Jefferson said. “A lot of people think I'm a bad person, but they don't really know me. So I'm just going to show them the real Damontrae, and not what they are assuming me to be.”

Cleveland State, UC-Irvine and New Mexico State have shown interest, and Jefferson said he wants to visit Rhode Island and Georgia Tech.

He is ranked No. 112 in the 247Sports Composite.
