Updated Top 25 (and one)

I spent last Sunday night writing about North Carolina's impressive win over Louisville that, in my mind, compensated for an earlier loss to Belmont and made the Tar Heels worthy of inclusion in the Top 25 (and one). Now here I am, a week later, again writing about the Tar Heels, but this time after a loss at UAB that dropped them out of the Top 25 (and one).

And what are we to make of this team?

Yes, I know Jerod Haase is doing a nice job at UAB, and that the Blazers took New Mexico to double-overtime last month. But also on UAB's resume is a 21-point loss to a Temple team that already owns losses to Kent State, Towson and Clemson, point being that Temple isn't very good. And UAB? UAB is ranked outside of the top 100 at KenPom.com. So this is a great win for Haase, and a terrific win for UAB. But let's not get it twisted. This is not a good loss (or even a quality loss) for North Carolina, and now we're right back where we were, with more questions than answers about the Tar Heels and what's possible without P.J. Hairston.

Things will probably get worse before they get better.

Why?

Because next up is a trip to top-ranked Michigan State.

So North Carolina will almost certainly drop to 4-3 late Wednesday. Then the Tar Heels get Kentucky a week from Saturday, and it's hard to figure how things will go. If they can beat Louisville on a neutral court, I guess they can beat Kentucky at home. I guess. But if they can lose to Belmont at home and UAB on the road, then they could theoretically enter legue play with five losses, and I assure you that wasn't Roy Williams' plan when he built this schedule.

Anyway ...

The Top 25 (and one) updates every morning and also on Sunday nights.
