Updated Top 25 (and one)

I'm not big on dropping lower-ranked teams for losing to higher-ranked teams, especially in true road games. I rarely do it. But, at some point, we have to start evaluating Michigan more on what it is as opposed to what we thought it would be, and, I think, that time is now.

Forget that Michigan was No. 10 in the preseason Top 25 (and one).

Here's what Michigan is now:

  • A school with a 5-3 record that is the result of playing four teams that are currently ranked 227th or worse at KenPom.com.
  • A school with a loss to a Charlotte team that is unranked in the Associated Press and Coaches polls, and only rated 77th at KenPom.com.
  • A school whose best win is over a Florida State team that just lost by 10 to a Minnesota team that last week lost by 14 to Arkansas in the Maui Invitational.

So, yeah, on the surface, there's nothing embarrassing about Michigan's 79-69 loss to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium late Tuesday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. But if you watched that game, you know Michigan was never a serious threat to win. Combine that with the fact that both East Carolina and Vermont played Duke more competitively at Cameron than the Wolverines did, then pair all that with the the reality that Michigan's best win (over Florida State) became less of a good win Tuesday when the Seminoles lost at Minnesota, and, I believe, it's reasonable to drop Michigan from 22nd to unranked in the Top 25 (and one).

Which is what I did.

Florida State is now out, too.

Those developments cleared two spots.

San Diego State and Iowa are the schools that claimed them.

Anyway ...
